Reduce Your Energy Bill: Energy Saving Tips Around the Home

Reducing your energy bill doesn’t have to mean expensive renovations and insulations, there are things that you can do around the home to immediately reduce your electricity and heating bill, and with the cost of fuel rising, minimising the amount of energy you waste is good for the environment and your purse strings.

How can I instantly reduce my heating bill?

Turn down your thermostat! By setting the temperature for just 1°C lower you could cut your annual heating bill by 10%. Make sure that your central heating is programmed to come on at the times that you need it and the rooms that you use. Turn off radiators in rooms that you don’t use everyday. You can also reduce heat loss by closing windows and doors and closing your curtains promptly at dusk. If you get cold put on an extra layer rather than turning up the heating.

How can I instantly reduce my electricity bill?

There are lots of ways that you can cut down your electricity bill. Make sure that you turn lights off when you’re not using a room, turn appliances off rather than just to stand by and don’t let mobiles and laptops overcharge. Turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby could save you around £40 a year. Also make sure you use your appliances wisely for example only switch on the washing machine and dishwasher when it is full and where possible seek alternatives for example drying the washing outside rather than using your tumble dryer. When you do need to use the tumble dryer don’t use it for longer than you need to, once the clothes are almost dry take them out and allow them to air dry.

How can I save energy when cooking?

Even when cooking you can save energy by only using what you need. For example only boil the amount of water that you need in the kettle, don’t use an unnecessarily large pan and cook on the right sized hob for your pan. When cooking keep lids on the pots wherever possible and don’t open the oven door more than you need to – all these things allow heat to escape and therefore waste energy. It is also more energy efficient to cook larger batches of food at one time; you can then portion out meals and pop them in the freezer to be eaten at a later date. Serving your meals straight to plates rather than putting them into serving dishes will cut down on the washing up, which in turn will save water and energy.

As well as home renovations and buying energy efficient appliances, these simple measures are free to implement and really will save you money on your heating and electricity bills.
